Why we built the scale
I built the Nexy scale after my fourth excess-baggage fee in twelve months. The fourth one was $125 at a Jetstar gate in Sydney because my carry-on weighed 7.4kg — 0.4kg over.
I had a perfectly accurate scale at home. It was the bathroom scale, and like most bathroom scales it was off by about 1.4kg. Every time I'd weighed myself holding the bag, then myself alone, then done the maths in my head, I'd been working off a number that was wrong.
Most "luggage scales" you can buy at Kmart for $9 are off by 200–300 grams and have no backlight, so you can't read them at 5 a.m. before an early flight. ±50g (0.05kg) at typical luggage weights. We test against a calibrated 10kg laboratory weight before each batch ships. Note: airline scales themselves vary by ±100–200g, so we recommend leaving a 0.5kg buffer below the stated airline limit.
Does it come with a battery?
No — the scale runs on 1× CR2032 button cell, which is sold separately. We chose not to include one because button batteries can't ship safely with every order under Australian battery-shipping rules without lots of extra packaging. You can pick a CR2032 up for about $2 at any chemist, supermarket, or post office. Once installed, a fresh CR2032 lasts 2+ years of typical pre-flight use (one weighing per trip, ~30 trips per year). Auto-off at 60 seconds prevents drain.
What is the maximum weight?
50kg / 110lb. That's enough for the heaviest checked luggage on any commercial airline (Qantas caps single pieces at 32kg). Above 50kg the display shows "EEE" — no damage to the scale, but you've packed too much for a plane.
What if it breaks?
2-year warranty covers manufacturing faults. We replace it free, no postage, no return required. Email us a photo and we ship a replacement to your door.
Can I take it through airport security?
Yes. The scale is a small battery-powered device that passes through security like any other small electronic. The CR2032 is the safest possible lithium configuration for AU domestic and international shipping.
